I'll Make Him an Offer He Can't Refuse

This was one I never saw coming. I had a dad try to bribe me one time.  It was the end of the term and his daughter, who was very bright and capable, was looking at an F.  She simply wasn't doing the work.  We tracked it for weeks using every carrot and stick routine in the book.  No dice.  One day after school towards the end, Dad walked into my room unannounced and sat down. He and I got along pretty well.  So after some small talk, he said (and I'm paraphrasing here a bit) "You know, you and I have been around the block a few times. We know how the world works.  What would it take to make this F go away?"  I told him his daughter needed to get the work done.  He didn't push it and when he left, I made a beeline for the principal's office just to cover myself.  In the end, the daughter came around at the last minute and I cut her some slack to avoid the F.  In retrospect, I don't think she or her parents ever thought I'd actually follow thru with a failing grade for the whole term.  But I had my extensive documentation all lined up and was prepared to do just that. I was tired of playing Let's Make a Deal. When it became apparent that it was going to happen, things changed dramatically and we had no more problems the rest of the year. At least I didn't wake up with a horse's head in my bed.
